Kzoo Journalist Bombed in Iraq

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Remember Iraq?

Three coordinated bombings yesterday brought a bloody halt the relative peace of the past few months. And so on and so forth. If you don’t know about it already, you can read up on your own –> Google News

Meanwhile, one of our own is recovering from the shock and wounds of one of the bombings while keeping up with the story for multiple outlets. Ben Lando just happened to be in the middle of one of the targets when a bomb went off outside.

You can read his own account via Time’s web site.

For those who don’t know him, Lando is a WMU grad, a member of the Loy Norrix class of ’98, a former general manager at WIDR, a former reporter for more news outlets in this town than is worth mentioning and just an overall good guy. And I’m sure many people around here are keeping him in their thoughts and prayers as he keeps up the good work over there.

Seriously. Not impressed, Kalamazoo.

Barking Tuna Fest was this past weekend. Four acts; 20 bucks; about the only time we get any sort of reputable indie acts in town. Hear the fish, love the fish

Hear the fish, love the fish

This just in: WIDR, the campus radio station of WMU, has a headliner for its annual music fest. Heading up the festivities will the Fruit Bats, a SubPop band out of Chicago. They’re filling in where Regina Spektor fell off not so long ago.

Just as exciting, last night’s finale of Battle for the Tuna revealed an opening act for BTF. Kalamazoo artist Matt Black and the Natural Mystics wowed the crowd at the Strutt enough to win the fish fight and take the bottom spot on October 10 at the State Theater.
