Dude aTOMic

Dude-aTOMic

From the Western Herald: Dude-aTOMic aims for fame.

One of the reasons for setting up this site was to document some of the interesting, devoted or inexplicable people who live in this town. Dude definitely fits in that category.

Area filmmakers need 8k for TV pilot

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

The trailer is … well, a little amateur. But the concept is clever.

Dragons is the story of two old skateboard buddies, described as a cross between burned-out hippies and pirates(?). And if that description doesn’t sell you, here’s the thrust of the story: The duo are on a quest for enlightenment; at the end (they hope) they’ll skate down the side of a mountain, “turn into balls of fire and fly away as Dragons.”

There’s also some stuff about evil real estate agents, the protagonists’ own disarming lack of focus and blindfolded stick-fighting. The whole thing strikes me as a kind of the Big Lebowski meets Beavis and Butt-head, with a bit of Napoleon Dynamite thrown in for good measure.

The story is being developed as a TV series. Among the folks behind it is Travis Dopp, known to many as the guitarist for Small Brown Bike.

The green light is a long way off, though. And Dopp and company need your help. The group is crowdsourcing production funds. They have until April 18 to raise $8,000.

As of this writing, they’re about $2,500 short of their goal. They’re running the fund drive through a service called Kickstarter.com. You can visit their page here: Dragons @ Kickstarter.

Country station closing down, talk station starting up

Monday, March 29th, 2010

So much for country music in Kalamazoo.

Former classic rocker Y96.5 laid everybody off this afternoon, announcing that it will begin rebroadcasting the signal from the AM talk station down the hall, WKZO.

Just at the moment (11pm, March 29, 2010) 96.5FM is still running country music so I don’t know when the actual change will happen. But I do know the ax came down around 5:00 and ain’t nobody comin’ in after that.

It’s an ignominious end for that spot on the dial. As many will remember, Y96.5 used to be WFAT, a classic rock station, until February of 2008. Midwest Communications, which owns WKZO and Y96.5 as well as a dozen or so other stations around swMichigan, swept out the rock dust in order to preempt Cumulus Broadcasting‘s rumored move into the country market. It must not’ve gone so well.

On a side note, Midwest Communications may repeat the same switch in Lansing. The company is in the process of buying the Edge (WVIC 94.1), Q106 (WJXQ 106.1), WJZL (92.9) and 92X (WQTX 92.1). Supposedly, they’re going to dump one of those to a talk format.
